Kolyai Rug, West Persia, Late 19th Century, 2.03m X 1.28m

Woven by the Kurdish weavers of West Persia around the city of Hamadan at the end of the 19th century, this intriguing village rug has a very unusual ornament repeated through the field. The winged figure could possibly be interpreted as an eagle, an image often seen in Kurdish art. The wool quality and natural dyes are superb, and it has survived in very good condition. Professionally cleaned.
