Description

A fine quality and rare pair of King George V cast silver Menu Holders formed as Mr Punch, his wife Judy, on plain circular bases.

Made By Horace Woodward & Co, London, 1910 - 1911

These exceptional cast sterling silver menu holders have been realistically modelled in the form of the classic 17th century puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Each cast silver figure is embellished with details reproducing the characters period attire and anatomical features.

The Judy character is holding their baby in her arms.

These exceptional examples of antique silver are fitted with plain circular supports to the posterior surfaces.

Each character surmounts a plain hallmarked circular plateaued base.

* Mr Pulcinella Punch and his wife Judy re-enact comical classic tales incorporating a wide range of 'guest' characters; many of these characters fall victim to the violent nature of Mr Punch's club. The enacted story typically involves Punch behaving foolishly, struggling with his wife Judy and the baby, all triumphant over the law whilst incorporating classic jokes and songs.

Novelty silver menu and card holders gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, reflecting the periods fascination with whimsical, highly detailed tabletop accessories for formal dining.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver using casting techniques, often followed by hand-chasing and polishing to define the intricate facial expressions and textural details of the figures.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, which indicate the assay office, date letter, makers mark, and sterling silver standard.

These decorative objects can be placed on a sideboard or used functionally on a dining table to hold place cards, adding a touch of narrative character and historical charm to a tablescape.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft, lint-free cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasives that can wear away fine details and historical patination.
