Description

A very interesting and I suspect quite rare antique solid silver sewing tool or weaving? It is hallmarked and tests as 800 grade silver. I would date it to c1800's. It has been unusually made having its terminal decorated with a hand holding a strange hammer like tool. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits chips cracks and repairs. It measures approx. 6.25 inches (16cm) long by 0.75 inches (2cm) across and weighs 30 grams. A very interesting piece.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Antique Silver Lace Bobbin to the 19th Century.

Preservation requires storing silver in a low-humidity environment and using non-abrasive microfibre cloths to remove tarnish gently, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip away desirable historic patina.

These small collectables can be housed inside glass-topped display tables, arranged within shadow boxes, or placed on decorative trays alongside other historic curiosities.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct hallmarks, natural age-related tarnish, hand-carved or hand-punched detailing rather than modern casting flaws, and appropriate wear patterns consistent with manual use.

These tools were typically fabricated using sterling or coin silver, often featuring hand-engraved surface ornamentation, punched detailing, and cast figural elements created by skilled silversmiths.

Lace making and delicate needlework were prominent domestic arts during the nineteenth century, requiring specialised implements crafted from various materials including silver, bone, and wood to handle fine threads.
