19th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Pair Late 19thC Hammered Brass Trays with African Animal Motifs attr Newlyn School 40cm c1880.

A superbly stylish pair of Arts and Crafts, hammered brass, late 19th century trays attributed to Newlyn, apparently unsigned, each featuring a native African repousse impressed animal, a lion and a springbok whilst showing a magnificent patination.

An expertly crafted, associated pair of trays, measuring apx 40cm square with an elegant, timeworn patina, each displaying the repousse, reverse impression of native African wild animals, possibly a springbok and a lion.

We are attributing these to Newlyn, TBV, the style, quality and period suggest so and at some point these have been fixed with a plaster type product to the rear which may conceal a makers stamp.

A wonderful pair of decorative, antique trays, both fine examples of Arts and Crafts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts metalwork emphasised visible hand-hammering marks, natural motifs, and honest craftsmanship as a direct reaction against mass industrial factory production in late 19th-century Britain.

Craftsmen shaped sheet metal by hand, beating the background with hammers and working from the reverse side to push out three-dimensional relief designs of animals, plants, or abstract patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-worked hammer facets, crisp repousse detailing from hand tools, natural surface oxidisation or patina, and occasionally stamped maker marks or workshop monograms.

These decorative trays can be displayed resting on a sideboard top, arranged within a gallery wall wall-mount display, or placed flat as a central focal piece on a coffee table.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive polishes that remove natural aged patina; applying microcrystalline wax helps protect against further metal oxidisation.
