Description

Gundorph Albertus was a Danish silversmith (born 1887) working for George Jensen in the early 20th Century and becoming head of production following Jensen's death in 1935. Probably his greatest achievement was designing the iconic 'Cactus' pattern for the company's flatware range.

This wonderful early example of his jewellery is in the style of a 'Bunad' brooch - traditional Scandinavian wedding brooches often worn by men on the collar. It is set with red and yellow paste stones and has a pendant fall to the base, being fastened with a 'C' clasp.

A wonderful and rare piece from a sought after maker. Dimensions below.

Preservation requires storing pieces in anti-tarnish pouches away from humidity and chemical exposure from perfumes or lotions. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle polishing with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip the intentional oxidisation from recessed details.

Antique brooches offer versatile styling potential when pinned to contemporary lapels, silk scarves, or structured knitwear. Alternatively, they can be mounted within specialised glass display frames as miniature sculptures of mid-century design history.

Authenticity is verified through official makers marks, designer monogram stamps, and silver purity hallmarks such as S for sterling or standard national assay marks. Examining the weight, hand-chased micro-detailing, and secure pin mechanics also helps distinguish genuine workshop productions from later imitations.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver, frequently enhanced with oxidisation to create depth within the chased and repousse details. They are often set with cabochon gemstones such as garnet, chalcedony, or malachite, reflecting the firms dedication to organic textures and fine hand-finishing.

Georg Jensen founded his silversmithy in Copenhagen in 1904, establishing an iconic aesthetic that merged Arts and Crafts traditions with early modernist functionalism. Gundorph Albertus, a master silversmith and long-time assistant director, brought precise geometric ornamentation and classic Scandinavian restraint to the workshops output.
