Description

A rare opportunity to acquire an exquisite antique porcelain plate in the Sèvres style, crafted in France at the end of the 19th century. This decorative cabinet plate features a rich cobalt blue background (bleu de roi) and is adorned with lavish 24-carat gold gilded ornamentation, showcasing delicate scrolling patterns.

The centerpiece displays a beautifully executed hand-painted scene of two elegantly dressed women in 18th-century attire, rendered in soft pastel tones. The artwork bears the signature Gayou, a recognized artist associated with the Limoges factory during the late 19th century.

While the base carries a mark resembling Sèvres, this plate is most likely a finely crafted Limoges piece, as suggested by the faint Limoges marking beneath the pseudo-monogram—a common practice in that era to emulate the prestigious Sèvres aesthetic.

Highlights:

Exceptional craftsmanship and luxurious design

Rich cobalt blue (bleu de roi) with hand-applied 24-carat gold detailing

Signed Gayou – associated with Limoges

Characteristic of late 19th-century French Rococo revival

Provenance: Likely produced in Limoges, renowned for creating Sèvres-style decorative plates for aristocratic clientele.

Dimensions:

Diameter: 21.5 cm

Weight: 376 grams

Condition:

Excellent antique condition with complete gilding preservation. Minor signs of age consistent with period.

This stunning collector's item embodies the elegance and sophistication of French decorative arts. Ideal for discerning collectors, connoisseurs, or as an investment in fine European antiques.

The item will be securely packed and shipped with full tracking and insurance. Shipping costs include handling, professional packaging, and postage.

Sevres style porcelain originates from the renowned French factory and is characterised by its rich ground colours, often cobalt blue, combined with elaborate hand-painted pastoral or figurative scenes and heavy gilt ornamentation.

These pieces are crafted from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, featuring hand-applied mineral enamels and raised or chased gold leaf detailing fired at high temperatures.

Authenticity is typically verified through underglaze factory marks, incised numbers, the finesse of the hand-painting, and the natural ageing of the gilt and ceramic body.

Display the plate on a dedicated stand within a glass cabinet or mount it securely on a wall to introduce a focal point of classical colour and craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to avoid abrasion. Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the hand-painted pigments and display in a stable humidity-controlled environment.
