FAQs

Silver plating became widely popular in the 19th and 20th centuries as an accessible alternative to solid sterling silver, allowing manufacturers to produce intricate decorative ornaments and tableware for the domestic market.

These items are typically produced using base metals such as white metal, brass, or pewter, which are then coated in a thin layer of silver using electroplating methods before receiving hand-finished surface detailing.

Authenticity and age are typically determined by examining the manufacturing marks, the weight of the metal, the wear patterns on the silver plating, and the style of casting technique used.

These decorative objects work well when placed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or coffee tables, adding a touch of metallic texture and classical wildlife imagery to both traditional and modern schemes.

Silver plating should be cleaned gently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist polish to avoid wearing away the thin metallic layer, and kept in a stable environment away from high humidity.
