FAQs

Chinese export silver refers to items crafted in China by local silversmiths primarily for Western markets between the late 18th century and the mid-20th century. These pieces often combined traditional Chinese craftsmanship and motifs with European forms requested by foreign merchants.

These vessels were typically handcrafted from high-grade sterling silver, often testing above standard sterling purity. Artisans utilised techniques such as repousse, chasing, piercing, and hammering to create intricate, three-dimensional surface designs.

Authentic pieces often feature artisan signature chops, pseudo-hallmarks mimicking British marks, or retailer marks stamped into the base. The weight, high silver purity, hand-chased depth, and natural ageing patination also help determine authenticity.

An antique silver bowl functions effectively as a focal point on a sideboard, coffee table, or mantelpiece, contrasting cleanly against contemporary minimalist or dark academia aesthetics. It can be displayed empty to showcase its metalwork or utilised to hold small trinkets.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a high-quality, non-abrasive silver cloth or gentle specialised polish to preserve the original patina and fine chased details. Avoid harsh chemical dips, and store the item in a dry environment away from direct sunlight.
