Description

This charming kilim was probably woven in the Oltenia region, Romania in the early 20th century. The fine wool on cotton foundation, and tapestry technique with subtle use of curved wefts all point to that region. The central flowering vase with other scattered floral ornaments are very typical of the folk style of the Balkans, was very much in vogue as wall decoration right up to the 20th century.. In this rug the subtle pale grey/green background contrasts with the dark green border while all the other colours are very pale and subtle. This is a very decorative kilim which would work well in any number of settings. It has survived in excellent condition.
