Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Although it is clearly a tribal weaving, the design is a quirky attempt at a formal medallion and spandrels design. The large pendant medallion appears to be floating above the midnight blue field which is also filled with floral ornaments. There is a lovely change of colour in the shade of blue in the bottom and top parts of the field. Uncharacteristically, the spandrels do not share the same design as the medallion. Note also the charming ivory floral border with a meandering vine. For the lovers of idiosyncacy, note that the medallion is off centre (see photo). In good condition, with good even pile. The ends have been stopped. Professionally cleaned. This enigmatic rug should appeal to both collectors and those looking for a decorative addition to their interior.
