A Georgian bureau bookcase is a dual-part writing and storage cabinet developed during the eighteenth century in Britain. It features a slant-front bureau at the base containing a drop-down writing surface and drawers, surmounted by an upper cabinet equipped with shelves and enclosed by wooden or mirrored doors.

Eighteenth-century examples were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or walnut, with secondary timbers such as oak or pine used for drawer linings and backboards. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass drop handles and escutcheons, while upper door panels contained clear glass, mirrored glass, or timber fieldings.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, hand-sawn secondary timber on the rear casing, and period-correct brass fittings showing natural surface oxidisation. The slant-front writing surface will typically display original support lopers that pull out manually to hold the flap.

Place the piece as a focal point against a neutral wall in a home office, library, or drawing room. Style the interior writing compartment with contemporary stationery or ceramics, and pair the heavy timber structure with modern task lighting to create a balanced contrast.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent wood movement, shrinkage, or cracking.
