This Victorian decorative dish is made from silver-gilt with a gold colour and soft gilding on both the top and base. The piece has a shell shape, a scalloped scroll rim with ornate repousse decoration, and lobed fluting radiating from the centre towards the edges. The interior base displays an engraved heraldic crest and a monogram, while the underside stands on three dolphin feet. The dish has minor surface wear appropriate to its age. Measuring 15.5 cm by 15.5 cm with a height of 4 cm, the compact item is suitable for display on a sideboard top or as a decorative accent within a traditional living space or dining room.

Victorian silver gilt tableware refers to solid sterling silver items produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) that have been finished with a thin layer of gold, a technique also known as vermeil. This technique was used to protect the silver surface from tarnishing while providing the appearance of solid gold.

These dishes were crafted from sterling silver using casting, repousse, chasing, and fluting techniques to create decorative borders and textures. The gilded finish was traditionally applied through mercury gilding or electroplating gold onto the silver base.

Authentic items feature official British hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers mark for Garrard, the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark (such as the leopards head for London), a date letter, and the monarchs profile duty mark.

A silver gilt dish can be displayed as a standalone decorative object on a sideboard, placed on a coffee table to catch small trinkets, or integrated into a dining table arrangement as a centerpiece accent.

Silver gilt surfaces require gentle handling to avoid rubbing off the delicate gold layer. Clean exclusively with warm water and mild soap using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive silver polishes, chemical cleaners, or stiff brushes.
