Description

Technical Description

An Edwardian silver vesta case with a beautifully enamelled panel surrounded by granite inlay. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1906 and with the makers mark ‘J.C&S’ for Joseph Cook & Son. The lid exhibits a ring loop marked with the 925 lion standard. Gothic-style pointed archways, segments and borders have been stylishly engraved into the face with a deep ridged striker to the base.

The use of granite is a rare feature more typically associated with Victorian Scottish agate jewellery. It is a classic combination of grey Aberdeen granite and pink Peterhead granite. The enamelled panel is exceedingly rare and presents as an intricate saltire of red and blue, perhaps indicating a homage to the flags of Scotland, England, and the Union.

An Edwardian silver vesta case is a small pocket container made during the Edwardian era, specifically designed to store matches (vestas) safely and keep them dry.

These cases were typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring decorative inlays such as hardstones, granite, multi-coloured enamel, and hand-engraved surface patterns.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmarks stamped by an assay office, indicating the silver standard, year of manufacture, and the makers mark.

Such small collectables look sophisticated when displayed inside a glass tabletop vitrine, arranged on a decorative tray, or placed upon a bookshelf as a cabinet curiosity.

They should be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and cleaned sparingly using a soft, non-abrasive cloth specifically formulated for antique silver, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage enamel.
