A rushlight holder is a domestic lighting device from the 17th and 18th centuries designed to grip dried rushes dipped in animal fat, which served as an affordable source of illumination for rural households.

Traditional rushlight holders were predominantly hand-forged from wrought iron to provide a sturdy spring mechanism for the jaws, and were often mounted into turned wooden bases made from native timbers like oak or ash.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-forged tool marks, consistent historical oxidisation, wear appropriate to centuries of handling, and traditional joinery methods such as tangs secured through turned wooden bases.

Rushlight holders make exceptional sculptural focal points on mantelpieces, side tables, or open shelving, adding historical texture and a minimalist, industrial silhouette to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the object by keeping it in a stable environment away from excessive humidity and direct sunlight, occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to the metal and wood surfaces to inhibit corrosion.
