FAQs

Victorian silver plated candlesticks often incorporate revival motifs, drawing inspiration from classical, rococo, and gothic designs with heavy ornamentation and formal symmetry.

These pieces typically consist of a base metal, such as brass or copper, coated in a layer of silver using methods like electroplating, which became commercially viable during the nineteenth century.

Authentic pieces can be identified through makers marks, hallmarks or plate marks stamped on the base, alongside characteristic weight, construction seams, and natural signs of historical wear to the silver layer.

They can be used as symmetrical centrepieces on a dining table or placed on a mantlepiece to introduce reflective metallic textures and historical contrast into contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver cloths and specialized polishes to avoid wearing through the thin silver plating to the underlying base metal.
