Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chenets, also known as firedogs or andirons, are decorative metal supports placed in front of a fireplace hearth. Originating as functional tools to hold firewood, French decorative designs evolved in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries into elaborate ornamental pieces featuring sculpted figures, scrolls, and gilt metalwork.

Traditional French chenets are constructed using cast bronze and gilt bronze, often referred to as ormolu. The process typically involved lost-wax casting for detailed figures, followed by chased detailing and mercury gilding or fire-gilding to create contrasting polished golden and patinated bronze finishes.

Authentic antique pieces feature hand-chased details, hand-cut screws, cast iron rear billets or attachment points, and natural age-related patina or oxidisation. Look for heavy cast weight, crisp sculpting on facial features or foliage, and contrasting patinated bronze against fire-gilded metalwork rather than modern sprayed finishes.

Antique chenets can be positioned within an inactive fireplace opening or placed on a stone hearth to create a focal point. Interior designers also style decorative pairs on a wide console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece as sculptural art objects in classical or eclectic rooms.

Maintain bronze and ormolu by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid abrasive metal polishes, chemical cleaners, or water, as these can strip original gilding or historical patina; apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax if conservation protection is required.
