Chenets, also known as andirons or fire dogs, are decorative metal supports placed in front of an open hearth to hold logs or protect the surrounding floor from burning coals. Historically prominent in French interiors from the 17th century onwards, they served both functional and highly ornamental purposes in grand residences.

Traditional French chenets were predominantly cast in solid bronze, iron, or brass, with high-end examples featuring gilt bronze, also known as ormolu. These materials were selected for their weight, heat resistance, and capacity to retain detailed sculptural chasing.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased metalwork, distinct casting seam lines, and natural age-related oxidisation to the gilt surfaces.
