We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Elkington and Co. pioneered the commercialisation of electroplating in the 1840s, revolutionising the metals industry by allowing manufacturers to apply a thin layer of silver to base metals. This innovation made high-quality, ornate tableware accessible to a broader middle-class market during the Victorian era.

These sets are typically constructed from a base metal alloy such as nickel silver, copper, or brass, which is then electroplated with a layer of sterling silver. Artisans frequently employed hand-chasing, engraving, and cast applied mounts to finish the pieces.

Authentic pieces feature specific manufacturer hallmarks, including the Elkington & Co. stamp, date letters, and numerical codes indicating the year of production and electroplating quality. Detailed makers marks are usually stamped on the base of each vessel.

A silver tea service can be styled on a sideboard, bar cart, or dining table to add reflective metallic contrast to contemporary spaces. Pairing the reflective surfaces with natural textures like wood or linen helps balance the formal aesthetic.

Silver plated items should be hand-washed using a mild detergent and dried immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Tarnish should be gently removed using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish applied sparingly to preserve the plating.
