This antique hand-knotted wool main carpet originates from the Timuri or Baluch traditions around 1880, measuring 350 cm high by 193 cm wide and 1 cm deep. The tribal piece displays a classic repeat 'pencil box' or 'kalam donneh' compartment layout enclosing tree of life motifs, framed by geometric repeat box borders. The soft, muted palette incorporates terracotta brown, earthy reds and browns, indigo blue, aubergine, and olive green hues, complemented by long striped woven kilim ends decorated with a band of weft work and pale fringing. The wool rug exhibits an even, medium pile with expected corrosion to the brown areas and complete long ends. Suitable for light domestic use, the carpet works well as a floor covering in a gentleman's library, study, or living space to add warmth and texture. The traditional motifs and earthy tones coordinate effectively with classic or rustic interiors, bringing authentic historic character to a room layout.

FAQs

Timuri Baluch carpets are hand-woven tribal textiles created by nomadic Timuri and Baluch tribes along the borderlands of northeast Persia and Afghanistan, known for dark colour palettes and intricate geometric motifs.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool foundation, using natural dyes to achieve rich indigo, rust red, terracotta, and dark brown shades.

Authentic pieces generally feature soft wool, flexible foundations, flat-woven kilim ends decorated with striped or embroidered bands, and a dark colour scheme dominated by indigo and rust tones.

Tribal carpets function as grounding elements in modern interiors, providing visual warmth and historic depth when placed on neutral hardwood floors or polished concrete.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, clear spills immediately using a clean dry cloth, rotate periodically to balance wear, and employ a professional textile restorer for deep cleaning.
