Description

A beautiful antique Victorian stained glass ceiling lantern. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

It is of wonderful quality and has a stunning design. The pierced iron frame has gorgeous details, the stained glass panels have gorgeous colours and patterns.

The condition is excellent for its age, with just some very minor surface wear here and there. This was converted at some point from an oil lantern to electrical, we have had it re-wired and it is in good working order.

Victorian lighting typically incorporates heavy metal framing, ornate detailing, and coloured or textured glass panes, reflecting the eclectic design movements of the late 19th century.

These fixtures were predominantly constructed using brass, bronze, or cast iron frames combined with hand-cut stained, slag, or jewelled glass panels soldered with lead cames.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate hand-soldered lead lines, natural patina on the metal components, and traditional wiring methods or mounting brackets indicative of late 19th-century manufacturing.

Hanging a period lantern in a modern hallway or above a dining space introduces textural contrast, colourful light refraction, and a distinct focal point that anchors minimalist schemes.

Dust the metal and glass components gently with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasives that can damage the lead cames and original metal patination.
