Silver wine coasters emerged in the late 18th century to protect polished dining tables from moisture and stains caused by condensation on wine bottles and decanters. They were traditionally designed to be easily slid across the mahogany surface after the servants withdrew from the dining room.

Traditional wine coasters are primarily constructed from hallmarked sterling silver or silver plate, frequently paired with turned wood bases made from hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. The wooden base often features a green felt lining on the underside to prevent scratching the furniture.

Authentic pieces can be identified by examining them for clear hallmarks indicating the maker, standard of silver, assay office, and date letter. Additionally, genuine older pieces often exhibit natural surface wear, minor dents, and traditional construction methods such as a turned wooden insert secured by a pinned or threaded central boss.

Silver wine coasters can be utilised on a dining table, bar cart, or sideboard to hold bottles, or repurposed as elegant catchalls for small accessories in a living room or study. Their reflective metallic surface contrasts effectively with natural wood finishes and textured table linens.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a quality proprietary silver polish applied with a soft cloth to maintain its lustre, taking care to avoid harsh abrasives that could wear away thin silver plating. The wooden bases should be treated with furniture wax and kept away from excessive moisture and direct heat sources.
