This Austrian table decoration and comport from circa 1900 displays an Austrian Jugendstil style in silver-plated metal and glass. The silver-plated circular pedestal base supports a shallow basin with a moulded rim, housing a gold wash interior beneath a glass plate. A cast silver swan figure rests upon the glass surface, creating the visual effect of swimming on water. Subtle surface wear appears on the silver plating, while the interior shows a bright gold wash and the swan features detailed feather casting. The piece measures 11.5 cm high by 17 cm wide and 17 cm deep. Place this comport on a dining table center or side table in a home to serve as a striking conversation piece during meals. The metallic silver finish and warm gold wash complement classic dining room interiors, while the miniature wildlife motif adds a playful element to traditional settings. Guests at dinner parties can admire the clever optical illusion from across the table.

FAQs

A comport or tazza is a decorative pedestal dish or bowl designed to sit elevated above a table surface. Historically used to hold fruit, sweetmeats, or serve purely as a decorative centrepiece, these items were widely popular in European dining rooms during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Austrian metalwork from the turn of the century frequently combined silver or silver-plated brass and nickel with glass, enamel, or crystal accents. Artisans often utilised casting, chasing, and electroplating techniques to create detailed sculptural elements.

Authentic Austrian pieces from circa 1900 often bear maker marks, silver hallmarks (such as the Diana head mark used in Austria-Hungary), or maker stamps from prominent Wiener Werkstatte or Secessionist manufacturers. Examining the quality of the casting, joins, and hand-chased detailing also helps verify authenticity.

Place the centrepiece on a contemporary wooden dining table or marble sideboard to create a focal point through textural contrast. It can be left empty as a sculptural object or used to hold small decorative items in a hallway or living space.

Clean silver components gently using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads that can strip surface plating. If glass components are present, wipe them with a damp microfiber cloth, taking care not to submerge joined metal parts in water.
