Description

This charming little gabbeh has an indigo-blue field containing what look like stylised figures, surrounded by small quadrupeds - deer or gazelle. Gabbehs were used in the black tents for everyday use and when worn out, were simply discarded. Because of this, there are few surviving antique gabbehs now and they have become quite collectible.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gabbeh rugs are traditionally coarse, hand-knotted pile carpets made by nomadic tribes in southwestern Persia, particularly the Qashqai and Luri peoples, historically woven for personal domestic use rather than export.

Authentic pieces are constructed entirely from hand-spun sheeps wool for both the foundation warp and weft as well as the plush pile, utilising natural plant-based and mineral dyes such as indigo and madder root.

Authenticity is identified by irregularities in the weave and geometry, natural abrash colour variations from hand-dyeing batches, hand-finished selvedges, and genuine wear consistent with age rather than modern synthetic facsimiles.

An antique tribal runner provides tactile warmth and narrative depth, functioning effectively as a grounded focal point over hard flooring or layered atop a larger neutral sisal carpet in living spaces or hallways.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotary beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in antique textiles, and maintaining stable indoor humidity away from direct prolonged sunlight to protect natural fibres and dyes.
