This late 19th-century Persian Hamadan rug is a hand-knotted wool and cotton floor covering shaped in a rectangular format, measuring 177 cm high and 108 cm wide. The piece showcases a Persian tribal style with an indigo and navy central field decorated with geometric floral patterns, complemented by vibrant blue and red borders featuring stylised bird and floral motifs. Visible details include fringed ends along the top and bottom edges, a distinct multi-line border framing the dark central panel, and varied knots executed in shades of red, white, yellow, and blue. In a modern interior, the rug suits placement on wooden floorboards in a living room, hallway, or study to add texture and traditional pattern. The pile shows even wear consistent with age and professional cleaning, maintaining a practical surface for everyday domestic use.

Vacuum the rug regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush head to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear and light exposure, and address spills immediately by blotting with a dry cloth rather than rubbing.

A vibrant Persian Hamadan rug acts as an anchoring element in both contemporary and classical settings, grounding minimalist furniture with warm texture and historical depth. Layering it over neutral natural-fibre floor coverings like sisal or placing it on bare timber floors highlights its rich colour palette and geometric motifs.

Authentic antique Hamadan rugs feature a single-weft construction, hand-knotted Turkish (symmetrical) knots, and subtle colour variations known as abrash due to natural dye batches. The undersides display visible knotting patterns rather than uniform machine backing, and the edges are typically finished with hand-overcast selvedges.

Traditional 19th-century Hamadan rugs are crafted with a hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a sturdy cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. The wool was typically hand-dyed using natural plant extracts and minerals, producing deep indigo blues, madder reds, and rich terracottas.

Hamadan rugs originate from one of the oldest weaving regions in western Iran, encompassing the city of Hamadan and hundreds of surrounding villages. These rugs are historically renowned for their durable hand-knotted construction, geometric patterns, and rich vegetable-dyed wool.
