FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating produced by fusing a sheet of sterling silver to a thicker base of copper using heat and pressure, a technique developed in the 18th century before electroplating was invented.

These items were typically constructed from fused copper and silver sheets, often featuring soldered joints, removable internal straining meshes, and hand-beaten or cast decorative borders.

Authentic pieces often show subtle traces of reddish copper bleeding through high-wear areas where the thin silver layer has worn away over time, alongside characteristic soldered seams rather than modern machine stamping.

This piece can be displayed on a sideboard top or bar cart as part of a curated collection of antique silver tableware, adding metallic texture and historical interest to a dining room.

Clean the surface gently using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialist non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the thin silver layer or expose the underlying copper base.
