Mirrored plateaus gained prominence in French dining culture during the 18th and 19th centuries, continuing into the Art Deco period. Designed to protect polished wooden surfaces from heat and spills, the reflective glass base was originally intended to amplify candle light and display elaborate dining table centrepieces.
