Silver plating on base metals became widespread during the 19th century with the invention of electroplating, allowing households to display decorative items that mimicked solid silver at a lower cost. Animal figures, particularly sporting and farmyard subjects, gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as interior ornaments.

These figures are typically crafted using base metals such as brass, copper, or white metal, which are then coated in a layer of silver via electroplating or older Sheffield plating techniques. Details are often hand-chased or cast to accentuate the feather texture and anatomical features of the birds.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hallmarks, makers marks, or weight indicators stamped on the underside or base. Natural ageing is visible through patina, minor surface wear, and the gradual oxidisation of the silver layer over time.

These decorative pieces work well as focal points on mantelpieces, sideboards, or open bookshelves, adding metallic texture and a touch of traditional character to contemporary spaces. They pair effectively with dark wood furniture, leather accents, and neutral colour palettes.

Maintain silver-plated objects by dusting them regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and cleaning them sparingly with a specialized silver polish to avoid stripping the plated layer. Store or display them away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent accelerated tarnishing.
