A Superb Quality Pair of Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces

19th century
Description

A superb quality pair of three branch gilt bronze wall lights having interlocking scrolling arms and leaf drip pans from an ornate scrolling backplate these sconces are particularly well cast and also benefits from the most intricate chasing through out their entirety, as seen on these in hair line detail.

The ciseleur was in charge of removing the hardened and cooled bronze. He sharpened the edges and added a myriad of fine details which could not be achieved through the casting process alone. In order to create texture, a ciseleur would use tools called punches with variously shaped points.
