These English silver plated single arm grotto sconces date from 1930 and display a Rococo Revival style. The pieces exhibit a silver colour with an aged, burnished finish showing dark patina highlights within the recesses. Each sconce features a prominent scallop shell backplate, a fluted candle nozzle, a scalloped drip pan, and a scrolling candle arm decorated with detailed marine shells and fluid scrollwork. The dimensions measure 25 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. They function well on narrow wall spaces in a living room, hallway, or dining area to hold traditional taper candles without electrical wiring.

Grotto style design emerged in the eighteenth century, drawing inspiration from natural sea caves and marine organisms. Lighting fixtures of this style incorporate naturalistic scallop shells, coral formations, and fluid scrollwork motifs.

These wall fixtures were typically cast in brass or bronze before receiving silver plating, or crafted directly from solid sterling silver. Lost-wax or sand casting enabled artisans to reproduce the crisp details of marine forms.

Authentic examples feature detailed hand-chasing, characteristic oxidisation within deep recesses, and period-appropriate mounting mechanisms. Silversmith hallmarks or maker stamps are frequently struck near the backplate edge or candle nozzle.

Mount a pair on a narrow wall space or flank an entryway mirror to introduce texture and symmetrical balance. The reflective metallic surface adds light and depth to formal dining spaces or hallways.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a dry, microfiber cloth. For removing oxidisation, apply a gentle silver polish with a soft cotton pad, taking care not to rub excessively on plated high points.
