This is an Art Deco floor lamp from 1920 in the Odeon style. The piece is made of golden walnut with maple banding, showing warm brown timber colours and a square flared shade in pale fabric. The structure comprises a tapered rectangular stem with inlaid banding, a stepped square wooden base, and a small metal floor switch positioned on the platform. The lamp stands 193 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. Appropriate for domestic use in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study, the lamp provides upward ambient lighting while serving as a decorative sculptural object. The working electrical fitting accommodates a standard bulb to illuminate the contemporary lampshade, casting light across the room.

FAQs

Art Deco floor lamps, originating in the 1920s and 1930s, are defined by geometric silhouettes, stepped forms, and clean vertical lines. They frequently incorporate rich wood veneers, such as walnut or mahogany, alongside streamlined architectural elements.

Standard lamps from this era commonly featured solid timber stems veneered in figurations like walnut or maple, paired with heavy stepped wooden or metal bases for stability. Decorative contrasting wood bandings and fabric shades were also widespread components.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-correct joinery, natural timber patina, and geometric or stepped profiles characteristic of early 20th-century design. Original wiring may show historic cloth insulation, though modern safety standards often require re-wiring.

Position the lamp alongside a contemporary armchair or within an empty corner to create a focused reading nook. The warm wood tones and geometric form complement both minimalist modern interiors and traditional decorative schemes.

Dust the wooden stem and base regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct sunlight.
