FAQs

Victorian egg boilers and coddlers became popular dining accessories during the late nineteenth century as formal breakfast traditions and elaborate tablescapes gained prominence in British households.

These items were typically constructed from a base metal such as copper or nickel silver, which was then electroplated with a layer of sterling silver and finished with cast decorative elements.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks and hallmarks stamped on the base, the weight of the piece, the quality of the hand-engraving, and signs of natural oxidisation on the silver plating.

Such pieces function well as reflective decorative objects on sideboards or dining room consoles, adding metallic contrast and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional gentle cleaning with a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive materials that can strip the thin silver layer.
