Silver sauce boats, also known as gravy boats, emerged in Britain during the early 18th century, largely influenced by French culinary fashions that introduced specialised vessels for gravies and sauces.

These vessels are traditionally crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, often utilizing techniques such as casting for the body and handle, followed by hand-polishing and occasionally repousse or chased ornamentation.

Authentic pieces are identified through hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the makers mark, standard of purity, assay office, and date letter.

This item can be utilized as a decorative object on a sideboard, used to hold small items on a desk, or integrated into a table setting for formal dining occasions.

Preservation involves regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional cleaning with a specialist silver polish, avoiding abrasive materials that can damage the metal surface or wear down silver plating.
