Antique Pirot / Sarkoy kilim of scarce lattice design. A kilim of superb design and colour.

Circa 1920.

Pirot kilims are also known as Sarkoy or Sharkoy, they originate from the town of Pirot in south-eastern Serbia; where they have been made since the middle ages. The popular design style has spread across the Balkan region and into western Turkey. These are outstanding furnishing kilims with a very unique style in a wide range of designs and colours.

This example is of a scarce lattice design in soft ivory and cream colours on a warm red ground, the border is of a simple classic design and frames the kilim very well. The weave is typically fine and tight. A superb example with a simple but effective design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Pirot Sarkoy kilim is a traditional hand-woven flatweave tapestry rug originating from the Balkan region, distinguished by geometric patterns, natural dye palettes, and historical cultural weaving techniques.

These textiles are hand-woven on vertical looms using hand-spun wool, employing a slit-weave technique where warp and weft threads interlock to form flat, double-sided geometric motifs.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces feature subtle colour variations from natural dyes, hand-spun wool textures, intricate geometric borders, and a complete absence of synthetic pile or machine-sewn backings.

A red geometric kilim functions as a strong visual anchor on pale timber or concrete flooring, contrasting with neutral upholstery while introducing structural pattern to contemporary spaces.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment to protect the woven fibres, rotate regularly to ensure balanced light exposure, and engage a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
