A beautiful solid sterling silver gilt and enamel box. It is hallmarked 935 standard. I would date it to c1910 possibly Scandinavian. It has been beautifully made being hand painted with a horse. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures approx. 1.25 inches (3.2cm) across by 0.5 inch (1.2m) tall and weighs 14 grams. A superbly made very high-quality piece.

Enamel horse boxes, often produced as pill or trinket boxes, gained significant popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting a strong cultural fascination with equestrian sports, hunting, and racing.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver featuring guilloche or painted enamel lids, often combined with engine-turned texturing on the body to enhance grip and decorative appeal.

Authentic items feature period-appropriate hallmarks indicating metal purity and makers marks, alongside hand-applied enamel work that displays natural ageing, fine brushwork, and traditional hand-chased detailing rather than modern printing.

Such decorative objects work well as focal points on small occasional surfaces, adding a touch of classic equestrian heritage to a curated tablescape or shelf display.

Preservation involves storing pieces in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight to prevent enamel fading, and cleaning the silver sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the enamel.
