FAQs

Victorian oil lamps are characterised by ornate metalwork, classical architectural influences such as Corinthian columns, and often incorporate coloured glass fonts or etched glass globes.

They were typically constructed using cast and stamped brass, often paired with blown glass reservoirs in colours like cranberry or cobalt, and topped with frosted or etched glass chimneys and globes.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy cast brass components with genuine age-related patination, maker-marked burner mechanisms, and hand-etched or blown glass rather than modern machine-pressed glass.

An antique oil lamp can serve as a striking sculptural accent piece on a sideboard, console table, or mantle, adding historic contrast and metallic texture to contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes on brass components to preserve the natural patina. Glass shades can be washed cautiously in lukewarm soapy water.
