Stirrup cups were traditionally offered to riders before a hunt while they remained seated in their saddles, holding their stirrups. They date back centuries and were commonly cast in silver, pewter, or ceramic, often taking the shape of animal heads.

These pieces were typically crafted using sterling or continental silver through casting, chasing, and hand-engraving techniques to achieve fine textural details like feathers or fur.

Authentic pieces generally feature period hallmarks, maker marks, or purity stamps such as German crescent and crown marks, alongside natural patination and wear consistent with age.

They can be displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table as a cabinet curiosity, adding a touch of classic equestrian or naturalist aesthetic to a room.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized silver cloth to preserve the underlying patina and fine detailing, avoiding harsh abrasive dips that can damage the metal.
