Patch boxes became fashionable in the 18th century for storing small silk or velvet patches used by both men and women to cover blemishes or smallpox scars.

These small containers were typically fashioned from sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved borders, beaded rims, and occasionally enamel or mirror interiors.

Authenticity is usually verified by examining hallmarks for maker marks, standard marks, and date letters, alongside observing the hand-beaten construction and natural patina.

Such small collectables look effective displayed on a dressing table tray, atop a stack of vintage books, or within a glass-fronted cabinet alongside other small curiosities.

Silver items should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive, high-quality silver polish and a soft cloth to preserve the underlying metal and historic hallmarks.
