Victorian Silver Nurses Buckles

19th century
Sold 2 November 2025 · Digby Antiques (Wiltshire)
This “Victorian Silver Nurses Buckles” found a buyer.

It was listed by Digby Antiques (Wiltshire). Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

After further investigation we have concluded that these unusual items are most likely nurses buckles.

The hook at the top would loop over and around a button and the buckles would attach to fabric. As they are silver they would have been safe to wear in an operating theatre and would have had antibacterial qualities. The chains move through the buckle ends so giving some movement as the body moves.

Engraved with the owners initials (we believe she was a nurse) Cross keys date of 16th November 1858. They were given as a gift from BGL.

No silver marks but tested as silver. Great quality and condition.

Nurse buckles became popular during the Victorian era, often presented to nurses upon completion of their training or as service awards, typically featuring ornate pierced silver designs representing hospitals or nursing associations.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver using manufacturing techniques such as stamping, pierced fretwork, and hand-engraving, frequently bearing British hallmarks.

Authenticity is verified by checking for clear silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark, alongside assessing the natural tarnish and wear consistent with nineteenth-century use.

These items can be displayed within glass-topped table cases, mounted in shadow boxes, or styled alongside other small curiosities on a bookshelf to highlight their intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation involves storing pieces in acid-free tissue and cleaning them infrequently with a microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip the aged patina.
