A vinaigrette is a small ornamental box featuring an internal pierced grille, designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar for masking unpleasant odours.

Traditional vinaigrettes are crafted from sterling silver or silver gilt, often featuring intricate hand-engraving and a gold-washed interior to protect the silver from the corrosive properties of the vinegar.

Authentic pieces typically bear British hallmarks including a lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter, a makers mark, and a duty mark indicating the reigning monarch.

As a diminutive collectable object, it can be displayed delicately on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed as an accent on a bookshelf alongside other small curiosities.

Preserve the piece by avoiding abrasive silver polishes that can wear away the fragile gilt interior and fine engravings, instead using a soft microfibre cloth to gently remove dust.
