Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This circular decorative plate is an antique Mason's ironstone piece from 1920 in a Victorian style, executed in cream and brown ceramic with enamel and gilding. The surface displays a central fruit basket motif with hand-painted enamel accents in red, pink, yellow, blue, and green, framed by a brown filigree rim border and a gilded outer edge. Additional hand-painted fruit groupings sit around the cream well, while the underside and profile show the traditional ceramic construction of the form. Measuring 2.5 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 26 cm deep, this small ceramic item fits comfortably on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. It serves as a decorative tabletop display piece or a cabinet plate for visual accent in a dining room or living area, bringing traditional ceramics into contemporary interior styling.

FAQs

Masons ironstone china is a heavy, durable vitreous earthenware patented by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, in 1813. It became renowned for ornate transfer-printed and hand-painted decorations inspired by oriental porcelain and botanical motifs.

Ironstone was produced by mixing slag and flint with local potteries clay, creating a dense, hard body designed to resist chipping. Pieces were fired at high temperatures before receiving glaze coats, transfer prints, and hand-painted enamel or gilded details.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside, frequently incorporating the phrasing Masons Patent Ironstone China alongside a crown motif. The heavy body, slight bluish glaze tint, and hand-enameled detailing over printed outlines serve as key identifiers.

A decorative ironstone plate can be displayed using an easel stand on a sideboard top or integrated into a ceramic wall grouping above a console table. Pairing historical tableware with modern, clean-lined furniture creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive pads that could remove surface enameling or gilding. Avoid placing antique ironstone in dishwashers or soaking pieces with fine glaze crazing.
