How do fusee movements work?

A fusee movement uses a conical pulley connected to a chain that winds around the mainspring barrel. As the spring loses tension, the chain moves to a wider section of the cone, maintaining steady power. This clever mechanical compensation prevents the clock from losing speed as the power diminishes between windings.

Where were these clocks originally used?

These timepieces were mounted in railway stations, telegraph offices, schools, and military installations where keeping accurate time was critical for operations. Their bold dials ensured staff and passengers could check the time quickly from across a busy platform. Railway examples often bear company lettering on the dial face to denote the specific network they served.

How do I wind a wall clock?

Most fusee wall clocks require a specialised key inserted into a small hole in the dial face to tension the mainspring via the chain and pulley system. Care must be taken not to overwind the mechanism. Routine maintenance involves regular checks of the suspension spring and occasional professional cleaning of the brass gear train.

How do I identify the railway company marks?

Railway company inscriptions such as initials or full names are painted directly onto the dial surface or stamped into the timber case. These markings indicate the specific transport network that once owned and maintained the timepiece. Matching the numbers on the back of the case to railway logs can reveal further operational history.
