How do I hang a large display plate safely?

Use a spring loaded brass wall hanger designed specifically for heavy porcelain chargers and plates. Ensure the fixing is secured directly into solid wall structure rather than plaster alone. Check the weight distribution of unusual shapes like square or scalloped plates before mounting. Padded prongs prevent scratching the glaze and enamel surfaces.

Are these plates meant for daily dining?

These decorative pieces serve primarily for display rather than practical dining use. The delicate enamel colours and gold leaf applied over the glaze can wear down with food contact and washing. Gentle dusting maintains the surface without risking damage to the hand painted details. Kitchen display racks or wall mounting protect the ceramic body from accidental chips.

What does the imari palette typically include?

The traditional palette relies on deep cobalt underglaze blue combined with rich iron red enamel. Artisans frequently added supplementary colours and gilt highlights to complete the design. This distinct combination creates high visual contrast across floral and avian motifs. European factories later adopted similar colour schemes for their own wares.

How can I tell a charger from a standard plate?

Chargers measure significantly larger in diameter than regular dining plates, often exceeding thirty centimetres. Their generous size provides a wider canvas for complex pictorial scenes involving multiple figures or birds. Because of their bulk, chargers were primarily manufactured for decorative display on walls or sideboards. Standard plates tended to see more varied domestic uses.
