Imari ware originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the port from which it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. The style gained widespread recognition during the Edo and Meiji periods for its striking combination of underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration.

Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay. The traditional process involves painting in cobalt blue underglaze, firing at high temperatures, and subsequently applying iron-red enamels, complementary pigments, and gold leaf before a secondary glaze firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit subtle hand-painted variations along with characteristic unglazed foot rims that show natural aged oxidation. Look for traditional panelled motifs, deep underglaze blue tones, and gentle wear on overglaze gilded or red enamel details.

A group of Imari plates can be mounted on a neutral wall as a gallery feature or placed upright on a sideboard or mantelpiece using plate stands. Their cobalt blue and iron-red palette pairs effectively with natural timber, brass accents, and contemporary schemes.
