FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export porcelain produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed during the 17th century, it is characterised by its distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red, gold, and enamel details.

Imari ceramics are crafted from dense porcelain clay containing crushed stone known as petuntse. The pieces are decorated with cobalt blue underglaze before being fired at high temperatures, after which iron-red enamels and gilt highlights are applied and fired at a lower temperature.

Authentic Imari porcelain typically features slightly irregular hand-painted brushwork, subtle imperfections in the glaze, and spur marks on the underside where the piece rested during firing. Earlier pieces may also exhibit deep cobalt blues and wear on the surface gilding consistent with age.

Imari plates can be displayed on plate stands atop sideboards or console tables to add rich colour and pattern to a room. Alternatively, mounting a pair or group on a neutral feature wall creates a focal point that bridges classic craft with contemporary decor.

To preserve overglaze enamels and gilding, clean Imari porcelain by gently wiping with a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or submerging the items in water, as heat and detergents can degrade delicate overglaze decoration.
