King Size Bed Frame
A king size bed frame offers scale and presence, bringing traditional joinery and period proportion to a bedroom.
King Size Bed Frame
A king size bed frame spans several periods, ranging from Regency items to pieces dating through nineteen hundred and nineteen twenty. The selection covers French Chateau, French Neoclassical, French Empire, Portuguese Country, French Provincial, Art Deco, and Italian Neoclassical styles.
The forms include standard beds, bedsteads, bed frames, and five foot double beds, often accompanied by matching nightstands. Buyers find both carved wooden structures and forged iron designs within the listings.
Continental origins dominate the records, with French and Italian pieces appearing alongside English examples. Many items feature upholstered headboards and footboards paired with exposed wooden frames.
How they were made
Construction relies on solid timbers and veneers, utilising walnut, oak, satinwood, and general timber. Carved wood details often receive painted, parcel gilt, or gilt metal finishes.
Metalwork appears in forged iron frames, providing structural rigidity alongside decorative scrollwork. Caning and new fabric upholstery are integrated into wooden and painted frames.
Joinery methods support large proportions, accommodating five foot widths and extensive headboard panels. Surface treatments include original paint, polished veneers, and gilded accents.

What varies in quality
Depth of carving and sharpness of detail separate standard production from finer workshop output, particularly in Regency and Neoclassical examples. The execution of parcel gilding and painted finishes alters the visual weight of the timber.
Selection of wood grain, such as figured walnut or matched veneer panels, determines the aesthetic standard of the headboard. Structural integrity depends on the weight of the timber and the precision of the original frame joints.

King Size Bed Frame: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for a wooden bed frame?
Maintaining a wooden bed frame involves regular dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding direct sunlight to protect polished finishes. Checking joint connections periodically prevents loosening from daily use.
Wax or polish formulated for antique timber preserves the surface of walnut and oak frames. Painted and gilt sections require gentle cleaning without abrasive solutions.
How are different periods identified?
Identifying periods relies on examining decorative motifs, construction techniques, and silhouette proportions. Regency items display classical lines, whereas Art Deco pieces show geometric symmetry and streamlined walnut surfaces.
Regional variations also indicate origins, such as the curved lines of French Provincial or the ornate carvings of Louis styles. Materials like satinwood and forged iron further anchor pieces within specific eras.
Can I fit a modern mattress?
Many older bed frames accommodate standard modern mattress sizes, particularly five foot models often listed as matching UK king dimensions. Internal rail measurements determine exact compatibility.
Some continental pieces require custom mattress sizing due to historical measurement standards. Adjusting the internal slat system allows modern support while retaining the original frame.
