This Victorian period bedstead dates from 1890 and follows a classical style. The frame combines cast iron, wrought iron, and brass materials, finished in blue verdigris with simple castings. Key decorative elements include polished brass finials atop the posts, curved brass top rails on both the headboard and footboard, and alternate vertical spindles in iron and brass. The painted blue verdigris surface shows textural variation across the iron framework. It accepts a UK king size base and mattress set, measuring Height - 157 cm, Length - 216 cm, Width - 152 cm. Suitable for use in a principal bedroom or guest bedroom within an English country house interior, this bedstead provides a focal sleeping arrangement. It requires a separate firm or sprung bed base resting on the internal frame to support the mattress. The robust construction ensures stability for everyday domestic use while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

FAQs

Victorian brass and iron bedsteads became prominent in the mid-19th century, featuring cast iron framework combined with decorative brass tubing and finials. These frames were engineered for durability and hygiene, moving away from fully upholstered wooden designs.

Traditional construction incorporated wrought iron for slender bars and spindles, cast iron for weight-bearing corner joints and brackets, and hollow brass tubing for decorative top rails and finials.

Authentic period bedsteads feature heavy cast iron corner joints with dovetail fits, hand-threaded brass components, and subtle surface irregularities from historical casting techniques rather than uniform modern welds.

A verdigris-painted metal frame integrates well with neutral linen bedding, exposed timber flooring, and cool-toned soft furnishings to balance vintage metalwork with contemporary textures.

Clean painted iron and verdigris surfaces gently with a dry, lint-free cloth without abrasive chemicals. Unlacquered brass fittings can be periodically treated with specialised metal polish to preserve or tone patination.
