This Victorian king size bedstead dates from 1890 in the English Country House style. Constructed from iron and brass, it has a cream painted finish combined with polished brass elements. The frame incorporates tubular posts topped by round finials, a curved top rail, simple castings, and vertical spindle detailing along the headboard and footboard. A blue textured cover drapes over the bedding, complementing the white pillows decorated with blue patterns. Measuring 152 cm wide by 213 cm long with a 145 cm height, the bedstead accepts a standard UK king size base and mattress set. It functions as a central bedroom centerpiece in a domestic home today, requiring an additional firm or sprung bed base and a suitable mattress to complete the sleeping arrangement.

FAQs

Metal bedsteads gained widespread popularity during the mid-to-late Victorian era due to industrial manufacturing advancements and public health campaigns promoting iron frames for hygiene. Craftsmen combined cast iron frameworks with polished brass tubing and finials to create sturdy, decorative sleeping furniture.

Traditional antique bedsteads were constructed using cast iron for corner joints and decorative brackets, rolled steel or iron for side rails, and brass tubing for decorative rails, spindles, and top knobs. Frames were painted with durable enamels and fitted with drop-in iron side members.

Authentic period bedsteads feature heavy cast iron joint construction, often referred to as dovetail or chime joints, rather than modern machine bolts. Brass accents typically feature threaded internal fittings, natural surface oxidisation, and hand-fitted construction details.

Integrate a painted metal bedstead into contemporary spaces by pairing cream or neutral frames with natural linen bedding, layered woven throws, and understated wooden bedside tables to balance the structured metalwork.

Clean painted surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and warm water, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that strip paint finishes. Polished brass elements should be dusted regularly and selectively cleaned with specialised brass polish to protect natural patina.
