This Victorian half tester bedstead originates from around 1870 and displays a combination of brass and iron construction with a buttermilk painted finish and a polished gold-coloured metal surface. The design incorporates turned brass spindles, decorative brass finials, and an overhead frame structure alongside cast iron rails and an original brass makers plaque positioned on the foot end. It measures 218 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 208 cm deep, designed to accommodate a standard king size mattress. Appropriate for placement in a master bedroom or guest suite, this period bedstead provides a focal sleeping arrangement with a traditional silhouette. The structure disassembles to allow straightforward transport and positioning within a domestic interior. The cleaned and polished metal surfaces exhibit a preserved mellow patina, pairing with the painted frame components to suit period and eclectic interior schemes.

A half tester bedstead is a nineteenth-century bed design featuring a frame structure extending overhead only at the headboard end. This partial canopy structure was originally developed to support fabric drapery and curtains to protect sleepers from drafts.

Victorian bedsteads were predominantly constructed using cast iron for the structural framework and rails, combined with hollow or solid brass tubing, turnings, and finials for decorative detailing.

Authentic nineteenth-century metal beds feature cast iron joints known as chill casts, stamped maker or registration marks on the frame, heavy gauge brass fittings, and threaded cast iron side rails rather than modern clip mechanisms.

A Victorian metal bedstead can be integrated into modern spaces by pairing it with crisp neutral bed linens to highlight the metallic framework, or by attaching tailored drapes to the upper frame for a classical look.

Maintain brass and iron components by wiping them with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes on lacquered brass, and protect painted iron sections from excess humidity to prevent oxidisation.
