This Victorian king size bedstead dates from 1890 and follows a classical English country house style. The construction combines black-painted wrought iron, cast iron and polished brass, presenting a striking contrast between the dark frame and the warm metallic elements. The headboard and footboard feature bowed brass top rails capped with ball finials, vertical metal spindles, and decorative cast iron shell rosettes accented with gold lining along the footboard. The frame accommodates a UK king size mattress set measuring 150 cm in width. Designed for a bedroom interior, this piece requires a separate support base to hold a standard mattress.

FAQs

Victorian iron and brass bedsteads gained widespread popularity in the mid-to-late 19th century as a hygienic alternative to timber frames. Manufactured using cast iron joints and tubular brass rails, these bedsteads were produced extensively across industrial centres in Britain.

Traditional late-19th-century bedsteads were constructed using wrought iron or steel tubing, cast iron corner joints, and solid brass turned components or rails. Frameworks were assembled using cast iron dovetail mounts that slotted together securely.

Authentic period bedsteads feature cast iron dovetail joints often stamped with numbers or foundry marks, heavy brass finials rather than lightweight plated caps, and hand-cast decorative rosettes along the spindle junctions.

An antique iron bed pairs effectively with modern minimalist bedding, neutral linen sheets, or layered textured quilts. Positioning the frame against a painted feature wall highlights the geometric silhouette of the brass rails and iron spindles.

Clean the iron structure with a soft cloth and apply microcrystalline wax to prevent surface rust oxidisation. Unlacquered brass fittings should be dusted regularly or polished with specialised metal cleaner, avoiding abrasive chemical solvents.
