This king size bedstead originates from the Victorian Arts and Crafts period around 1880, produced by James Shoolbred & Co. The piece consists of a brass and iron construction with a warm brass finish, displaying an aged mellow patina. Decorative elements include urn finials atop turned corner posts, geometric vertical spindles, and central ring motifs on both the head and foot boards, alongside a makers brass label positioned on the foot end. The frame measures 152 cm high, 168 cm wide, and 211 cm deep, and accepts a mattress measuring 168 cm by 200 cm. Suitable for placement as a central bedroom furnishing in a home, the bedstead provides a traditional focal point for sleeping quarters. The restoration includes a new upholstered platform base, preparing the piece for daily domestic use while accommodating a standard mattress configuration within a bedroom setting.

Victorian Arts and Crafts brass bedsteads combine traditional 19th-century metalworking techniques with simplified geometric designs, rejecting mass-produced ornamentation in favour of structured spindles and proportion.

These bedsteads were typically constructed using hollow brass tubing fitted over iron frames or cast iron joints, fastened with threaded rods and topped with turned brass finials.

Authentic period bedsteads feature heavy cast iron side rails with dovetail joints, stamped maker marks on the ironwork or brass caps, and natural patination across the metallic surfaces.

Pair the metallic frame with crisp white linen bedding, neutral wall tones, and layered wool textiles to create a balanced contrast between historic metalwork and modern softness.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip natural patina; apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the surface from oxidation.
